DETROIT METRO AIRPORT (DTW) INFORMATION

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is an international airport located in Romulus, Michigan and it serves Detroit and Ann Arbor in Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio in the United States as well as Windsor, Canada.

The airport’s IATA code is DTW and the ICAO is KDTW.

The airport is also called Detroit Airport, Detroit Metro Airport, Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport as well as DTW Airport.

Plans to build an airport in Wayne County first began in 1927 and construction was completed in 1929 with the first flight landing in February, 1930.

Michigan Air National Guard operated at the airport during 1931 to 1945, World War II. During that time the airport was named Romulus Field.

After the war the airport was expanded to three times the size and renamed Detroit-Wayne Major airport as it became Detroit’s primary airport. The expansion included the addition of three runways. More runways and further expansions have taken place since.

The airport has service to approximately 30 international destinations as well as more than 100 domestic destinations in 39 states across the United States.

Today the airport is owned by Wayne County, Michigan and it is operated by Wayne County Airport Authority. It is a hub for Delta Air Lines and a focus city for Spirit Airlines.

The number of runways today is six. Three of the runways have concrete surface and the other three have surfaces of asphalt and concrete. The three concrete runways are 12,003 ft/3,659 m, 10,001 ft/3,048 m and 8,500 ft/2,591 m respectively while the asphalt/concrete runways are 10,000 ft/3,048 m, 8,500 ft/2,591 m and 8,708 ft/2,654 m respectively.

Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport saw a total of 14,105,007 passengers pass through it in 2020, a decrease from the almost 37,000,000 passengers that came through it in 2019. This is the first time the airport has registered below 30 million passengers annually since 1996.

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport Terminals

DTW has two passenger terminals, the Edward H. McNamara Terminal that serves Delta and AirFrance and the North Terminal that serves all other airlines as well as charter flights. The Edward H. McNamara Terminal is usually referred to as simply the McNamara Terminal.

McNamara Terminal was previously known as the Northwest WorldGateway.

McNamara Terminal has three concourses, A, B and C, while North Terminal has one, Concourse D.

DTW has a total of 129 Gates divided throughout the four concourses of the two terminals. 103 of the gates are located in McNamara Terminal, while the remaining area located in North Terminal.

Complimentary shuttles connect the two terminals with each other with a frequency of every 10-15 minutes.

Parking at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport

Detroit Metro Airport has short and long-term parking options available in the parking facilities located opposite each of the terminals. Skybridges connect the terminal with the respective parking facility. Each parking facility, the McNamara Terminal Parking Garage and the Big Blue Deck, also have a Ground Transportation Center.

Daily parking can also be found at the Green Lots located slightly further from the terminals. Complimentary shuttles transfer travelers between the terminals and the parking lots.

Cell Phone Lots are located at each end of the airport.

Handicap accessible parking spaces are available in all parking areas.

The DTW Destination gives entry through the security control to non-travelers. If someone wants to explore the shops or dining establishments, surprise an arriving traveler or join the traveler all the way through to the gate they can apply for the pass the day before they want entry. Entry can be denied and the pass can also be suspended during peak hours and seasons.
